Catholic Communities in KC

Having good friendships and wider Catholic community to support, form, and challenge us in the faith has always been important throughout Church history. However, as we enter a more “apostolic age,” these more intentional Catholic communities are more important than ever. The local Catholic communities below provide both friendship and formation, whether for a season of life, or sometimes for one’s entire life.

Heart of the Redeemer

HRCC is a Catholic charismatic covenant community in Kansas City. It is comprised of lay men and women, both single and married, who have committed themselves to one another in order to actively pursue holiness and to spread the Gospel. The best way to check them out is to attend their 1x/month gathering at St. John the Baptist church in KCK (currently virtual due to COVID), which is open to the public. More info on their website!

Domestic Church

The Domestic Church movement was founded in 1973 in Poland and arrived in the U.S. in 2011. Since then, it has spread rapidly across the country. It exists to help married couples grow in holiness together. Couples begin by making a retreat, followed by joining a couples’ small group where they receive ongoing formation for living a holy marriage.

School of Love

School of Love, founded here in Kansas City by Mike and Kristi Dennihan, exists to deepen Catholic marriages and families in faith and in love, through continual formation programs and materials that are spiritual, intellectual, and relational. In addition to School of Love’s programs and materials, which are available to any family, School of Love is also a community of “member” families in Kansas City who are united in their efforts to strive for holiness within family life.

Opus Dei

Opus Dei is a movement, community, and spirituality all sort of rolled into one, that helps lay people strive for holiness in their ordinary daily life. It was begun in 1928 by St. Josemaria Escriva in Spain, and now numbers over 100,000 members across the world, with hundreds of thousands more who are loosely involved. Here in Kansas City, there are monthly recollections (mini, 2-hour retreats) for men and women which are led by a priest of Opus Dei. They feature Eucharistic Adoration, two meditations and a formation talk, and opportunity for the sacrament of confession.
